  1. Please note that number 10 on this list, "Dochu hiki" (sometimes translated as "A Traveler's Journey of Sorrow") was the source for Tomu Uchida's classic comeback film, "A Bloody Spear at Mt. Fuji," ranked 8th in the 1955 Kinema Junpo poll. Inoue had been a friend and former roommate of Uchida's, but he never saw the remake: he had died in 1954.
